Gunta Lovaraju

Gunta Lovaraju was born on 9th January 1999. His father died when Lovaraju was very young and his mother tried desperately hard to look after her three sons, prepared to do any sort of menial work from carrying rocks to laying tar.

class 4 and GuntaHowever the work was so poorly paid and so sporadic she became unable to provide food or shelter for her boys and Lovaraju was brought to the Home-cum-School four years ago. He returns to his village every summer to visit his mother.

This year he is in Class 4, the equivalent of Primary 6 in Scotland. Class 4 is the largest in the school with about 60 children. The class has been divided into two streams; Lovaraju is in the more able class, where many of the lessons are taught in English. In the other section, where children find lessons more difficult, the classes are taught in Telugu, the local dialect.

Many children are uneducated in India and SLA is very proud that the children are now being offered the curriculum set by the Indian Government. Lovaraju has greatly benefited from the education now on offer. He is a bright boy whose teachers are delighted with his progress. This is the first year the children are taught in subjects and Lovaraju’s favourite is maths. One day he hopes to be a doctor and work in the USA. He also loves sport and after every lesson he plays cricket with his many friends.

By becoming a CLASSMATE your help enables Lovaraju and others the chance to realise their dreams and continue in full time education – something we take for granted, but which is not available to the vast majority of the very poor in India.
