Past SLA Fundraising Events- 2009
Our organised fundraising events were a great success in 2009, thank you to all that participated.
Conwy Valley Carol Singers- December 2009
On 29th December the Conwy Valley Carol Singers from North Wales gave an hour’s concert at Greenbank Church, Edinburgh. The programme was a selection of seasonal music and readings with a Welsh flavour. Thank you to all our fantastic singers for making the long journey up to Scotland for this very special evening that was such a success.
Scottish Chamber Orchestra Concert - November 2009
After an unforgettable and emotional concert at our Home-cum-School in Hyderabad earlier this year, musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra very generously offered to give a concert to support the children.
The concert, 'Musicians hold hands with the Children of SLA, was held at Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh and was a huge success and well attended. We were extremely excited that several other musicians also took part, making for a very beautiful and diverse evening of music.
The other performers included the group Kilairum from St. Mary’s Music School and musicians from the talented Transgressive North group who spent last summer working with the children in our Tuni Home.
During this musical tribute to the children of SLA, we officially launched our exciting CLASSMATES sponsorship scheme.
Mamma Mia! Ladies' Cinema Night - September 2009
On the night, many ladies got into the Mamma Mia! mood by digging out their 1970’s outfits. The atmosphere was gloriously silly and fun. The 1970’s raffle with prizes including space-hoppers and lava lamps was a blast from the past and the Greek tapas canapés and fizz went down a treat.
A big thank you to top saxophonist Phil Bancroft, guitarist/vocals Drew Watson, guitarist/vocals Clint Steele and percussionist Nick Murray (aka Benny, Bjorn, Agnetha and Frida) for being such great sports in their fancy dress and providing some ABBA tunes to get the girls into the mood on arrival.
Also thank you to all the ladies who helped organise the tapas and to all who helped pass on the word and sell tickets. Without you nothing would have happened. It’s wonderful that SLA can raise over £4000 through such a fun and sociable event. Watch out for the next SLA themed night at the Dominion Cinema.
Summer Business Networking Event - June 2009
A summer business networking event was held in aid of SLA on the 16th June 2009. The event was held at The Scottish Gallery, 16 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, EH3 6HZ and was a great success. In a thank you note to SLA one guest who attended wrote "It was my privilege to meet the entreprenuers of Edinburgh at the lovely venue of The Scottish Gallery for a noble cause. I really enjoyed meeting and sharing my experiences with a lot of interesting and innovative-thinking people. I liked the concept of the evening, it was not just a networking meeting but a casual get-together to create awareness of charity."
Meadows Marathon - 15th March 2009
A big thank you to the 60 runners who supported SLA by running in the Meadows Marathon on Sunday the 15th of March. Twenty-nine of the participants came all the way up from Durham University to run, others were Edinburgh University students and some loyal SLA supporters ran for us too. Many of the runners were great sports for wearing our SLA chicken outfit and hats to publicise SLA as well as other fancy-dress outfits, well done everyone and hopefully see you again next year!
Ladies' Cinema Nights - January 2009
The Girl's "Sex and the City" Cinema Nights hosted at the Dominion Cinema were a huge success. A saxophonist welcomed the girls on arrival , then they were ushered to Gold Class seats where canapes and a bottle of fizz to share were awaiting them. The main message we are getting back from guests is "What a fantastic night, we should do this more often, when is the next one?".
Many thanks to the Dominion Cinema for their generousity in supporting this event for SLA and to Lush who sponsored the Tombola.
