Rice Relay Challenge

Why not try to get the whole school involved in one sponsorship event and participate in the SLA Rice Relay Challenge.

Read our Rice Relay Guidelines to see how to set up the Rice Relay for your class or school.

Rice is the main food for millions of people in the world. For many it is their only food; breakfast, lunch and tea. Not only is it the main food but often it is also the main source of income. Rice is grown all over South East Asia. Farmers-and they may only have one field- sell the rice to local dealers and sustain their families with the small amounts of money they receive.

Many of our children have come from this farming background. When the rice crop fails, or the parents become ill, no rice is produced and poverty and destitution beckon. It is then our charity is approached by desperate families or workers in the field spot children rummaging in rubbish tips for survival.

Before you do the rice relay you could ask the children to find out a little about the importance of rice, how it is grown and see if they can imagine every meal they eat is RICE!
