For the first time, the children at the Light of Love Home and School were put forward for their 10th class final exams in both English and Telegu medium, the fruition of our joint partnership to develop and establish a full English medium stream in the school.
We are delighted to report that all children have passed their 10th class final exams; 21 Telegu medium students and 17 English medium students.
This year’s 10th Class are the first class to come right through the whole system. Our Indian partners said that the children worked extremely hard for these exams under the guidance of teaching staff.
In 2007 in discussion with SLA, our Indian partner identified a need to develop English Medium teaching to improve the English reading, writing and conversational skills of the children in the Tuni School, and so enable them to compete in modern India. With SLA’s support they established an English Medium stream in Kindergarten, and this year these children have now reached Year 10. Volunteer groups have played their part over the years, taking part in the classrooms and conversational English, and adding a Scottish flavour to the children’s English. Our Indian partner is aware that the children’s future prospects depend on improving their English, and so the English Medium stream will continue to run from Kindergarten right through to Year 10.
The Further Education institutions and the jobs, which some of the children dream of, require the ability to converse in English and comprehend spoken English, not just textbook English. The absence of these skills effectively prevents them from competing on a level playing field with peers in more urbanized and affluent areas, many of whom have access to private schools educating exclusively in English.
