SLA welcomes volunteers to India to help directly with the work of our partners. SLA offers suitable, interested volunteers the opportunity to spend time working with our partners in Hyderabad, and in Tuni.
What kind of work do volunteers do?
The purpose of these projects are to work with our partners and make an immediate difference to the children in our care, and to have enormous fun while doing it! You could be taking part in English conversation classes, arts and crafts workshops, and helping to organise sports and outdoor activities. Volunteers arrive with a sense of common purpose and leave feeling they have contributed to the development of our work with the children our partners support.
You don’t have to be a skilled teacher or a sports coach to volunteer, just the enthusiasm to work with the children that we support, and in good health.
“The SLA journey began with a group of committed, idealistic young people volunteering in India to build a Home for destitute children. It was a revelation for all. SLA wants to share that extraordinary experience with you.” (Gillie Davidson MBE, Founder)
How long are the trips?
The trips last 16 days, usually departing on a Saturday, so if you are in work, you will need to take two weeks off (10 days).
When are the Volunteer Projects?
We have two volunteer trips each year, these trips usually go for two weeks in July/August and November/December. Please select or indicate which trip you are applying for on the form, or on your online application.
Can I apply on my own?
Yes! The groups are made up of all sorts of people from all different age groups, and lots of people will apply on their own.
I am part of a youth/church/sports (etc.) group and we want to travel together, is this possible?
If you are a group and wanting to go over together to work on one of our projects please contact the SLA office and we can provide you with more information.
Do I need to be fit to volunteer?
You need to be fit and in fairly good health for the project, as the climate and conditions in India can be difficult for some. If you are taking any medication before or during the project, you MUST inform the group leader, and this must be disclosed to your insurance provider.
How do I join up?
You can either apply online or print off an application form. You must also agree to our Terms and Conditions.
How much does it cost?
The cost of two weeks volunteering in India is £1200, this includes
Volunteers need to cover the cost of their own international flights, insurance and visas
Volunteers will need to book and pay for their own international flights. SLA will recommend what flight volunteers should go for, and will recommend deals with our travel partners. Volunteers can arrive before the projects, however they MUST be in Hyderabad on the 1st day of the project. This can be confirmed at the 1st group meeting.
Insurance and Visas
Volunteers need to provide their own insurance, and SLA will provide details of insurance brokers who can provide the necessary cover. Volunteers must also cover the cost of their Indian Visa.
To find out more information, or if you want to sign up, please contact our Development Coordinator, Scott Preston at firstname.lastname@example.org
As we will be working with children, all volunteers must join the PVG Scheme or undergo Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks as part of SLA’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy
