Why We Do It
SLA's purpose is to care for the children in our homes and give them a chance in life. To us, this project seems profoundly worthwhile and necessary. Many of these children have lost everything: their parents, their homes, and in some case even their liberty. Before arriving at our Homes many barely knew where their next meal would come from.
But how can this be, when India is becoming so rich so fast? Indians themselves best answer this question. Such as the former President of India K.R. Narayan, who said in 2000:

The children we care for come from this 'other India', a world away from booming, urban middle class society. This is the India that is home to more than half of the world's malnourished children, over 60 million kids who go hungry every day. This is the India where 15 million children are forced into bonded labour.
The majority of children we support also have the misfortune to be born Dalits. They suffer systematic discrimination and exploitation, as Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in 2006:

These are the reasons why we do what we do, and why we urge you to support our work.
