ASRITHA Rainbow Home, which is managed by our partner ARUN, cares for 100 girls formerly living on the streets of Hyderabad, where there are about 28,000 street children, often working as beggars or rag pickers and desperately vulnerable to exploitation.
SLA began to support this Home for a trial period of 3 years in October 2016.
The Home’s social worker encourages girls to leave the streets and enter the Home where they receive intensive ‘bridge courses’ of enhanced nutrition, basic education and social skills to enable them to recover their basic health, catch up and integrate with other children.
The Home is located in a mixed Muslim-Hindu area of Hyderabad and within the Doodhbowli government primary school building. Our partners have converted unused rooms above the classrooms to feed, house and educate the girls.
Using this unique model of public-private partnership, ARUN has successfully established 45 Rainbow Homes across India caring for more than 3,000 children and they are recognized by experts as best practice models of how to rescue and rehabilitate vulnerable street children with excellent results. More than 80% of Rainbow Home girls graduate from high school.
