Samaagam – the SCO’s collaboration with legendary Indian sarod player Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was officially released on the 30th May 2011.
Created by Khan and realised by conductor David Murphy,Samaagam, meaning confluence, or ‘coming together’, is a concerto for sarod, concertante group (SCO LAB) and string orchestra. Samaagam is based on ragas for the different seasons of the year and explores the common roots of the music of India and the West.
Premiered at the St Magnus Festival in 2008, it was subsequently performed at the City of London Festival, as part of the 2008/09 SCO Season and then by the Orchestra in an acclaimed six-date tour of India, the first Western Orchestra to visit the country.
Recorded at Perth Concert Hall in March 2010, following a live performance, the CD also features Three Ragas with Amjad Ali Khan as soloist.
