VOICE 4 Girls “Camper”

To stop her teenage cousin’s marriage, Amulya had to fight against the damaging cultural belief that girls can only make a living through marriage.

This was a struggle, as her cousin’s critically ill parents strongly believed that getting their daughter married off would ensure her welfare. They were confident that, when they passed away, only marriage would give their daughter financial security and a bright future.

Amulya was so thankful for our grassroots partner, VOICE 4 Girls, where she was made aware of the many ways in which child marriage can be negative for a girl. At VOICE, she also learnt to take leadership and use her learnings to support the people around her.

The experience gave her the courage she needed to approach her Dad about her cousin’s marriage, pass on her learnings from VOICE, and ultimately persuade him to adopt her cousin. Following conversations with her Dad, her cousin’s parents eventually agreed to call off the wedding!
