From Tuesday 3rd to Tuesday 10th December 2024, The Reed Foundation matched all donations made to the Big Give Christmas Challenge. That means your gift will go twice as far, changing more lives like Satya . A birth certificate is a simple piece of paperwork we take for granted. However, not everyone is so fortunate. Satya grew up without a birth certificate. This meant she was invisible. No name, nationality or identity. She had no rights. She did not exist, so had no legal protection.

She faced exploitation. She was at risk of child labour, child marriage, and trafficking. Satya was helped by our local partner, Rainbow Homes, to apply for a birth certificate.

This unlocked her potential, allowing her to go to school, to apply for a job, to go to University and to rent a room in a hostel so she could live independently. Had Satya not been supported to receive a birth certificate, she would not have received the opportunity to thrive.

But that’s not the end of the story. In 2023 Satya applied for a prestigious fellowship. She navigated 3 rounds of interviews before being selected. There were only 12 spaces across all of India, and Satya received one of them! Satya is researching the difficulties faced by children like her who do not have identity documents.

That’s just one way that Scottish Love in Action doubles our impact whenever we can. We work with local communities and partners to maximise their impact, build their capacity and create sustainable change. By working in partnership, we ensure your generosity can make the strongest impact.

Satya believes every child deserves a birth certificate. Do you agree with her?

This story is real. In accordance with Indian and Scottish regulations and recommendations, names and/or photos have been changed to protect identity and to respect confidentiality.
