SLA secures a BBC Radio 4 Charity Appeal

SLA broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

SLA were really excited to be chosen for a prestigious BBC Radio 4 Charity Appeal Broadcast. We were even more excited that it was on International Women’s Day, Sunday 8th March 2020 and that Konnie Huq (broadcaster, author, longest-serving female Blue Peter presenter) presented it.

‘I’m a broadcaster and author, but throughout my life I’ve championed the rights of women and girls and I’m also very pro-education. I’ve seen how education can change lives’ – Konnie Huq talks here about why she presented the BBC Radio 4 Appeal for us.

Listen to the actual broadcast on catch-up via the BBC Sounds app.

The Appeal is for our grassroots Indian partner VOICE4Girls, who give impoverished adolescent girls in India the knowledge and information to enable them to stay in education and avoid early marriage, early childbirth, abuse and violence.

£12 pays for one girl to take part in the VOICE programme, to transform her life, and the world around her, forever. You can donate via the SLA website. Or text HEARME to 70085 to donate £12.

{Texts cost £12 (plus a standard rate message). Charity receives the full amount minus a 5% fee (+VAT).  Terms and conditions.}

India is home to 1 in 3 of the world’s child brides. Girls are forced out of education and into work, child marriage and early childbirth. Things as simple as just getting the bus to school bring the risk of serious abuse and harassment. But give these girls a voice and they can change the world.VOICE 4 Girls helps girls resist being forced to do things against their will and helps them take control of their futures by:

  • teaching them about reproductive and sexual health, their rights, how to recognise, prevent and report abuse
  • giving them negotiation skills, enabling them to resist becoming child brides, child workers or victims of abuse
  • teaching them life skills such as future planning and building their confidence
  • encouraging them to become Sakhis – peer leaders – and to share what they have learnt with their schools, families and communities
  • VOICE also educates boys, teaching them the empathy and respect for girls and women that is critical to bring lasting change.

BBC Radio 4 Appeals are weekly 3-minute shows on Radio 4 that highlight the work of charities from across the UK. Appeals help raise money and awareness for a wide variety of causes.

In 2018/19 alone Radio 4 Appeals raised an impressive total of £1,219,603! SLA are delighted to be one of only 49 charities chosen for this honour this year.
